Baptist Health System cancer surgery program earns national recognition

Nov 15, 2023
Cancer program named ‘Surgical Quality Partner’ by American College of Surgeons

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has designated Baptist Health System as an ACS Surgical Quality Partner. The Surgical Quality Partner designation means Baptist Health System has met the highest standards of surgical care by minimizing complications, improving outcomes and saving lives.

Matt Stone, Baptist Health System group CEO, said The American College of Surgeons Surgical Quality Partner designation recognizes Baptist’s outstanding performance in cancer surgery.

“Congratulations to our cancer care surgeons, nurses, techs and teams,” Stone said. “This honor is due to their commitment to quality and dedication to our cancer patients that this achievement has been earned,” he said.

Morton Kahlenberg, M.D., medical director of Cancer Care for Baptist Health System, agreed. “This is a huge accomplishment,” he said. “This is a testament to the quality of surgical care that we provide our cancer patients. My heartfelt thanks goes to everyone who provides cancer care for our patients at Baptist. Their compassion for our patients and devotion to excellence makes the difference in the care we deliver,” Kahlenberg said.

ACS measures hospitals in how they credential and train their medical staff, measure quality improvements and collect data. For more than 100 years, ACS quality programs have enhanced the care of surgical patients. Participation in these programs shows that a hospital is committed to surgical quality and has met rigorous external standards confirmed by an outside verification process.

“Being an ACS Surgical Quality Partner means Baptist is dedicated to continuous improvement through use of data and adherence to ACS standards and resources to deliver the best possible surgical cancer care,” Stone said.
