(San Antonio, TX) – San Antonians can be proud to know that when it comes to patient safety, all six of the Baptist Health System hospitals have received top national ranking from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog organization upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers across the country. Baptist is the only hospital system in San Antonio to have all of its hospitals earn the ‘A’ grade this spring. The grades reflect performance primarily during the height of the COVID pandemic. This national distinction honors Baptist’s achievements in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors.

All six hospitals -- Baptist Medical Center downtown; Mission Trail Baptist Hospital on the south side; Northeast Baptist Hospital; North Central Baptist Hospital in Stone Oak; St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital in the Medical Center; and Resolute Baptist Hospital in New Braunfels, all part of the Baptist Health System, received an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group this spring.

Matt Stone, Group CEO of Baptist Health System said the hospital’s consistent track record for safety recognizes the staff’s commitment to placing their patients’ safety at the forefront. “Credit goes to our hospital employees who make it their mission every day to ensure they protect our patients from errors, injury, infections and all harm,” Stone said. “To be the only hospital system in town to achieve all ‘A’ grades for all of our individual hospitals, despite the challenges of the COVID pandemic, demonstrates our commitment to our community,” he said.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization with a 10-year history of assigning letter grades to general hospitals throughout the United States, based on a hospital’s ability to prevent medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Hospital Safety Grade results are based on more than 30 national performance measures and are updated each fall and spring.

“This new update of Hospital Safety Grades shows that, at the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “But Baptist Health System received an ‘A’ despite those challenges. I congratulate all the leaders, staff, volunteers and clinicians who together made that possible.” Binder said.
